African Savanna
Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor
The smallest of the flamingo family, lesser flamingos have a distinctive red lower beak. Kenya’s Lake Nakuru is their best-known breeding ground, but the number of individuals has dwindled as development has seen water quality deteriorate. The beak is curved in a dogleg shape and has comb-like projections called lamellae on the edge, which allow the fish to filter out food from the water and eat it.
