Oriental Stork Ciconia boyciana
This large bird is designated as a Special Natural Monument. It can only sing when it is a chick, but when it becomes an adult, it communicates by clapping the upper and lower beaks together to make a rattling sound known as "cluttering."
In the past, they lived all over Japan, but overhunting by humans and the effects of pesticides led to a decline in their population, and wild storks became extinct in 1971. Currently, there are efforts underway to "reintroduce" storks, which are bred in captivity and then returned to the wild.
