Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax

As juveniles, these herons are called hoshigoi in Japanese (hoshi meaning “star") because they have a white star-shaped pattern. As adults, their bodies become two-tone white and dark blue, and they are sometimes mistaken for a penguin due to their body’s shape and size. These are nocturnal herons that can be seen in their wild state in the Zoo.
