Elephant Village and Surrounding Area
Asian elephant Elephas maximus
Asian elephants live in family groups centered around older females. Males often live alone after reaching maturity. Their diet is varied and includes grass, bamboo, tree branches and leaves, as well as fruit. They skillfully use their trunks to grasp everything from large branches to small fruits. When drinking water, they first suck it up with their trunks and then pour it into their mouths. Due to deforestation and poaching, their population is declining. There are also increasing conflicts, such as elephants entering palm plantations in search of food for palm oil production.
