African Savanna
Eastern Black Rhinoceros Diceros bicornis michaeli
Rhino horns are made of the same material as hair and nails. Each individual horn is sharpened in a different way, so the length and shape vary.In some areas, rhino horns are sought for use in medicines or used to make dagger handles. Rhinos are hunted relentlessly and are now endangered. They have poor eyesight but excellent hearing and smell, and are particularly sensitive to sound, which makes them very timid despite their large size. They enjoy bathing in mud to moisturize and protect their skin. Black rhinos prefer branches and leaves, and skillfully use their pointed upper lip to attract food and carry it to their mouths. They have no incisors, so they grind it up with their large molars to eat.
