Japanese Raccoon Dog Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus
Despite its stocky body, they are omnivorous and feed on things such as insects, nuts and small mammals.
There are two subspecies of raccoon dogs in Japan: the Hondo raccoon dog, which lives in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and the Ezo raccoon dog, which lives in Hokkaido. They have a habit of defecating in a fixed place, which they use as a place to exchange information between multiple individuals. They are mainly nocturnal, becoming more active at night and moving around in family groups.
